Grade 3-8?Family science-experiment ideas presented by San Francisco's Exploratorium, a museum that supports the principle of "hands-on, minds-on." The staff covers a wide variety of topics from mirrors to structures to taking things apart. Activities labeled "Kids Can Do It!" can be done by readers on their own. Those called "Exploring Together" would be best done in conjunction with adults. A handy illustration of a clock gives children an idea of how long the experiment should take. Proper precautions are given for safety. Photographs and cartoonlike illustrations enhance the clearly explained directions. Youngsters will appreciate the abundance of ideas suggested here from dissecting a floppy disk or cassette tape to the more common growing of different kinds of crystals or molds. The list for further reading is divided by books for children, books for adults without a science background, and books for adults with a science background. An great addition to science shelves.?Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
