Grade 6 Up-These books record key historical events confronting these two countries before, during, and after colonialism. Such issues as the scramble for Africa, European conquest, slavery, and domination are discussed. The authors are keen to point out that Africans had their own medicine, commerce, politics, and social order before Europeans came and divided the continent into spheres of influence. This is reaffirmed by the world's preeminent paleontologist, Richard E. Leakey, who is among the contributors. Written African history before colonialism is almost nonexistent, as it was passed on orally and the little that is known comes from artifacts and fossils. The authors have relied heavily on the vast collection of photographs from the Royal Geographical Society in England, and it shows in the many vivid black-and-white photos. Fairly extensive maps are also incorporated. Ideal tools for assignments and class presentations.
